When listening to a recording of classical music, we often do not realize how far removed we are from the composer’s original idea of the music. The composer may have composed the music, but a musician performs it and a recording producer records it. Both the performer and the producer make musical choices, interpretations that shape the final result and influence what you hear. Pianist Daniël van der Hoeven is very much aware of this distance between the recording and the music that the composer had in mind. His goal is therefore to minimize his own presence.
On the CD Bach en Co, Daniël van der Hoeven invites you to accompany him on a journey that touches on some of his favourite pieces and composers. The first half of the CD consists of two of Johann Sebastian Bach’s piano works: the French Suite no 2 and the Partita no 2, music that is very close to Daniël’s heart. The second half of the CD is made up of examples of the most challenging of genres for pianists: preludes and fugues. Bach and Co. features works by four of the greatest masters of the genre: Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Shostakovich.
