Daan Oostdam belongs to the new generation of top pianists and presents his great love for Nikolai Medtner with his new album Idylle. Medtner’s music is still too rarely mentioned in the same breath as the compositions of great contemporaries like Rachmaninov and Skriabin. This radiant album shows that this is completely unjustified: Nikolai Medtner was an absolute genius, with very beautiful and idiosyncratic works for solo piano, among others. This album champions this composer, whose piano music offers a rich landscape of harmonic and melodic ingenuity strongly reminiscent of his rich song oeuvre and Russian poetry. The fact that Oostdam himself regularly takes long treks through nature in the process is clearly audible in his colourful melodic delivery and careful phrasing, which are as surprising and lively as a long walk through a nature reserve.
