With Pictures from One’s Exhibition, percussionist and filmmaker Konstantyn Napolov reinterprets one of classical music’s most iconic masterpieces for the twenty-first century. Inspired by Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, this cinematic album and original film soundtrack transforms the legendary musical promenade into a compelling journey through memory, imagination and contemporary culture.

The recording features pianist Ralph van Raat, violinist Merel Vercammen and Konstantyn Napolov playing over sixty percussion instruments from diverse cultures around the world. At its heart lies a daring new arrangement by Marijn van Prooijen and Konstantyn Napolov for piano, percussion and ad libitum violin — an instrumentation in which Mussorgsky’s visionary work has never before been realised on this scale.

The album bridges the gap between classical tradition, film, contemporary art and global soundscapes. In addition, the original work is expanded with new compositions by four international composers: Alam Hernández, Katherine Teng, Arefeh Hekmatpanah and Jasper de Bock. Inspired by masterpieces of modern and contemporary art, their compositions create a dialogue between generations, cultures and artistic disciplines, giving Mussorgsky’s original vision a new lease of life more than 150 years later.

Both epic and intimate, explosive and poetic, Pictures from One’s Exhibition blurs the boundaries between the concert experience, cinema and the visual arts. The result is a deeply immersive world of sound that invites the listener to step into a moving exhibition of sound, emotion and imagination.
